Like a lot of people, burnout crept up on me slowly. I used to enjoy my job but wasn’t getting the same pleasure out of it. I was working long hours but wasn’t feeling like I was particularly effective at my job. I remember talking to my manager at the time about that and he seemed a bit taken aback - from his perspective my work was as good as it always was.
The concept of burnout was very prevalent in my earlier job in healthcare IT. We’ve all heard the stats about burnout - as many as two-thirds of full time workers sometimes experience burnout at work. I recognized the symptoms in myself and took steps to handle it. I was able to overcome my burnout and now I want to help others do the same.
